To me the epitome of "sampling" (long before it was called that) is T. S. Eliot's "The Waste Land". He took bits and pieces of Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, and Esoterica, along with cultural references from a handful of different different nations, and made a portrait of post-WWI Europe.

When I was in High School, and attending a Uni-Uni Church, one of our ministers di something similar; mashing up e. e. cumming"s poetry into a sermon called "be of love (a little more careful)".
