I wanted to tell you all about an exciting new program being piloted this summer by the Iliff School of Theology, where I am on the faculty. Beginning this summer, we are offering courses to the public as part of a program called TIER. You can click that link to learn more, but briefly, these are one-credit-hour classes that can be taken at low cost for three weeks at a time to satisfy your intellectual curiosity, count as continuing education credit, or help you explore whether you want to engage in more formal theological education.
I am teaching two of these courses, and I wanted to encourage you to think about taking one or both of them.
Demystifying the Book of Revelation is a course that takes on the New Testament’s strangest book—and perhaps its most frightening. We will use art, biblical scholarship, literature, and material culture to think about Revelation and the ways it can be understood and interpreted for our own time and place.
Following the Lectionary Postcolonially is a class for anyone interested in learning how to read the Bible with a postcolonial lens. We will be focusing specifically on the Revised Common Lectionary readings for Advent 2024, but the principles will be applicable across the canon. Students will have the option to apply their learning in several different ways, including worship planning for the Advent season if you are a clergy person, and thinking more broadly about postcolonial biblical interpretation if you prefer that.
Besides my two classes, there are three others: Authentic Engagement, Re-Enchanting Ecological Praxis, and Dismantling White Silence in Churches. You can find more information about those classes at the link at the top.
These classes are offered online and asynchronously—you can take them from anywhere you have an internet connection—and there are lots of resources available to help you get acclimated to the technology. If you think you might be interested, click on those links above—maybe I’ll see you in class!
I arrive back in the states from walking part of the Camino on July 9. I’m interested in your second course and hoping I can start it 2 days late (the 10th). Thank you for letting us know about these classes!
